Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) gives permission to vendors to drive stalls, and handcarts as per the policy. Although there are currently 21,000 licensed businesses in Pune, at least twice as many are doing business on unauthorized commercial roads, sidewalks and intersections. Therefore, the issue of encroachment has become serious.

Encroachments are dealt with by every field office of the PMC, but before taking such action, the traders have to wait for the vehicle to come to seize the goods. So they hurriedly remove stalls, and handcarts from the main road and run into the inner lanes. While this type is rampant in the city, the encroachment department has not been able to control it.

The city’s 45 major roads and about 150 Square have been declared as restricted areas for the stalls. But this order is only on paper. There are encroachments and illegal stalls on every major road in the city or the suburbs. The Anti-Encroachment Department of the PMC has conducted a survey to find the hotspots of encroachment in the city, in which 264 places have been identified under 15 ward offices.

Due to frequent encroachments in this place, traffic is being obstructed and there are also disputes and quarrels. So there will be a mobile squad to take action against illegal traders. The administration has claimed that the encroachment will be less as the vehicles will pass through these roads and intersections three or four times a day.

Although the Encroachment Department has compiled a list of 264 places, it contains the name of the entire road in some places. So there are such hotspots on a road at regular intervals. So the number of these places may be higher.

For example, all the areas from Kalyaninagar to Vimannagar, Dhayari phata to Bhairavnath Temple Dhayari village, Katraj-Kondhwa entire road, complete Saswad road are mentioned.

Madhav Jagtap, Deputy Commissioner, Encroachment Department informed that “The Encroachment Department has listed the encroachment sites in the city according to 15 field offices. So each of these places will have a mobile squad to take action three to four times a day. This will automatically reduce the number of illegal traders. The Implementation of the same will begin soon.”
