Pune: 27 Tons of Garbage, 36 Km of Illegal Cables Removed on Day 1 of PMC Clean-Up
Pune, 2nd July 2025: A large-scale Deep Clean Drive launched by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has exposed the extent of neglect in the city’s public spaces, revealing rampant garbage accumulation, encroachments, road obstructions, and widespread urban defacement—all under the nose of departments tasked with daily upkeep.
Despite the presence of dedicated teams in the Solid Waste Management, Encroachment, Landmark, Road, Electricity, Garden, and Drainage Departments, the drive’s first day uncovered alarming amounts of unattended waste and hazards. The civic body itself admitted that the findings point to serious lapses in routine maintenance and enforcement.
As per instructions from Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, the Deep Clean Drive began on Monday across all 15 ward offices. On Day 1 alone, a total of 27 tonnes of wet and dry waste, 59 tonnes of roadblocks, and 12 tonnes of tree stumps and debris were cleared from public areas. In addition, 36 kilometers of unauthorised overhead cables were removed.
The clean-up operation involved 1,666 municipal employees, with participation from the Deputy Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, heads of departments, and regional officers. Each regional office selected key roads within its jurisdiction, focusing the cleaning effort on one major road per day.
Starting today, voluntary organisations and local citizens will also be involved in the drive, which is set to continue in the coming days.
