Pune: 47 Seats For OBC In PMC, Date Of Draw To Be Fixed Soon

Pune, 21st July 2022: Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates in Pune have gotten relief as the Supreme Court ordered the selection of local bodies with OBC reservations.

Out of 173 seats in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 47 seats will be reserved for OBCs. Previously, the reservation of 25 seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes has been fixed in the PMC. Now the reservation for OBCs will be decided from the remaining 148 seats. Therefore, the seats of the open category candidates will also get changed.

There is a ward of three members in the Pune Municipal Corporation elections. Out of 58 wards, 57 wards have three members. So one ward has two members. Out of 173 seats, 87 seats are reserved for women.

According to population, out of 23 scheduled caste seats, 12 seats are reserved for women. Out of 2 scheduled tribe seats, 1 seat is reserved for women. Reservation has been fixed in 24 wards of Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

For 47 seats, one seat in each of the 34 wards will be reserved for the OBC reservation. For the remaining 13 seats, OBCs will be drawn from the reserved wards for Scheduled Tribes.

Out of 47 OBC seats, 50 per cent i.e. 24 seats will be reserved for women. During the drawing of lots, reservations for OBC open category will be done first, followed by reservations for OBC women and then from the remaining 101 seats, reservations for women in the general category will be decided for the first time. Therefore, this calculation of open group seats will change.

Vikram Kumar, Commissioner, Pune Municipality said, “According to the orders of the Supreme Court, the date of the draw will be fixed by the Election Commission for OBC reservation, reservation in 47 out of 173 seats will be fixed.”
