Pune: 63-Year-Old Woman Electrocuted by Power Transformer in Mohammadwadi
Pune, 27th July 2026: A 63-year-old woman died after allegedly suffering an electric shock from a power distribution transformer (DP) in Mohammadwadi area on Sunday morning. Residents blamed the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) for negligence and demanded that culpable homicide charges be registered against the officials concerned.
The deceased was identified as Hirabai Laxman Javir (63), a resident of Krishnanagar, Lane No. 9, in Mohammadwadi.
According to residents, Hirabai had stepped out around 7 am to purchase groceries when she accidentally came in contact with the transformer installed along the roadside. She received a severe electric shock and collapsed on the spot.
Locals used a bamboo pole to pull her away from the live transformer before rushing her to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Residents alleged that MSEDCL personnel had carried out repair work on the same transformer a day earlier, on Saturday. They also claimed that another local resident suffered a mild electric shock while attempting to rescue the woman.
The Krishnanagar locality has an underground power distribution network with several small distribution transformers installed in residential lanes. Residents alleged that many of these transformers are in a hazardous condition and pose a serious risk to public safety. They further claimed that repeated complaints about the transformer involved in Sunday’s incident had gone unaddressed by MSEDCL.
The incident has triggered concern among parents over the safety of children living in the neighbourhood.
Hirabai Javir was a homemaker from a modest family. She is survived by four sons, a daughter, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Her sudden death has left residents of the area in shock.
Shiv Sena city president Pramod Bhangire visited the spot and later met the bereaved family. He extended immediate financial assistance of Rs 25,000 to the family and demanded that MSEDCL provide adequate compensation to the next of kin.
Bhangire also called for the immediate relocation of hazardous power transformers in the locality and said he would soon take up the matter with the concerned electricity department officials.
