NEET Aspirant From Ahilyanagar Dies by Suicide After Falling Short of Qualifying Cutoff in Re-Test
Ahilyanagar, 27th July 2026: A 19-year-old NEET-UG aspirant allegedly died by suicide at her home in Ahilyanagar district after reportedly failing to clear the qualifying cutoff in the Re-NEET examination. Police said a purported suicide note recovered from the spot suggested she was under severe stress over her result.
The deceased, Ankita Suresh Sangale, was a resident of Jalalpur village in Karjat taluka. Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and launched an investigation.
According to police, Ankita was alone in her room on Saturday afternoon while her father and brother had gone to Pandharpur and her mother was busy with household work. The incident came to light around 4.30 pm when her mother went to check on her. Her body was later sent for post-mortem examination.
“The preliminary investigation and the note left by the student indicate she was under severe stress due to her performance in the NEET-UG examination. Further investigation is underway,” Karjat police inspector Hanuman Gaikwad said.
Ankita’s uncle, Anna Sangale, said she had appeared for the NEET-UG examination on May 3 and was initially confident about her performance. However, after the examination was cancelled following the paper leak controversy, she had to reappear for the test on June 21.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) declared the retest results on July 16.
“She scored 166 marks, falling just short of the qualifying cutoff of 177 for her category. She had been under immense stress since the results were announced,” her uncle said.
Ankita, whose father is a farmer, is survived by her parents and a brother. Her last rites were performed on Saturday night. The incident comes amid growing concern over the mental health impact of the NEET-UG paper leak controversy.
