Shivajinagar, 23rd April 2025: A 65-year-old man lost his life following a road mishap at Rani Jhansi Chowk on Pune’s busy JM Road, after his scooter was hit by a car driven by a 19-year-old who ran a red light. The tragic incident occurred around 3:30 pm on April 15 and claimed the life of Renukadas Narayan Joshi, a resident of Deccan.

Police investigations revealed that the car, which was heading from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) office toward Ghole Road, failed to stop at a red signal and collided with Joshi’s two-wheeler, which was moving with the green signal from Sancheti Hospital toward Garware Bridge.

Sub-inspector Dattatray Sawant of Deccan Gymkhana Police Station confirmed the findings. “CCTV footage clearly shows the car breaching the red light. The scooter rider was following traffic rules when the accident occurred,” he said. Joshi reportedly fell on the road upon impact and suffered severe head trauma. “Though he managed to get up and mentioned feeling dizzy, his condition quickly worsened,” added Sawant.

The young driver, who hails from Jodhpur and is currently residing in Pune’s Sangvi area with his maternal uncle, is pursuing his Class 12 education through an external board. He and his uncle, who was seated beside him during the accident, immediately stopped the vehicle and rushed Joshi to a nearby private hospital. However, Joshi succumbed to his injuries while under treatment.

“A case has been filed against the teenager under charges of rash and negligent driving,” said Sawant. “Since Joshi’s family has not yet come forward to give formal statements, we registered the case suo motu based on evidence collected from the accident site and CCTV analysis.”

The police have recorded the statement of the driver’s uncle, who reportedly told officers that his nephew failed to notice the traffic signal. Further investigation is ongoing.
