Pune, 12th December 2025: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to immediately start operations at the newly constructed Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Bopodi, alleging that the fully developed facility has been left unused for months.

The party said repeated follow-ups with civic officials have failed to yield any action, prompting local women and party workers to stage a protest near the hospital.

AAP’s Ward 8 candidates Anne Anish and Vikas Chavan expressed concern over the hospital remaining non-functional despite being equipped with modern infrastructure. Anish said the only functional facility in the area, Sahyadri Hospital, accepts only normal, pre-registered delivery cases, which she termed inadequate for the community.

She added that a majority of pregnancy-related cases escalate into emergencies, making Emergency Obstetric Care and Emergency Medicine essential services. Given the dense population across the Bopodi–Khadki belt, she stressed that emergency maternity and trauma units must be activated at the earliest.

AAP leaders also alleged that the PMC frequently spends large sums on constructing hospitals but does not show the same commitment when it comes to operationalising them, eventually transferring such facilities to private entities. There is an urgent need for accessible, free healthcare for poor and middle-class families, said AAP leader Mukund Kirdat.

The party highlighted that the hospital’s location adjacent to the highway makes it strategically important for trauma care, which can save lives during the golden hour following accidents. AAP said this potential should not be wasted.

The protest saw participation from Mukund Kirdat, Anne Anish (Women’s Vice President), Vikas Chavan (Organiser), along with Sheetal Kandelkar, Shraddha Shetty, Akshay Shinde, Naushad Ansari, Satish Yadav, Surekha Bhosale, Shrikant Bhise, Rahul Tiwari, Shankar Thorat, Pooja Waghmare, Manoj Thorat, Milind Sarode, Wahid Sheikh, Sanjay Kone, Manoj Shetty, Wilson Alex, Milind Ovhal, Khairun Sheikh, Maya Jadhav and others.
