Pune: Action Planned By PMC And MSEDCL Against Property Tax Holders Misusing Residential Properties For Commercial Purposes
Pune, 17th June 2023: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) have joined forces to identify and take action against property tax holders who are wrongly categorizing their commercial properties as residential. It is important to note that property taxes differ based on the property’s designated use.
MahaVitaran (MSEDCL) will provide PMC with information regarding consumers who are utilizing their residential properties for commercial purposes. Armed with this information, the civic body will launch an investigation and proceed with appropriate actions against the violators.
Ajit Deshmukh, Head of PMC Tax Department, expressed, “It has come to our attention that several property owners are using their residential properties for commercial activities. Despite having commercial meters installed in these properties, they continue to pay property tax at residential rates. It is crucial to recognize that commercial and residential properties have different tax structures. Hence, we have partnered with MSEDCL to obtain information on such properties and initiate investigations.”
Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar highlighted the PMC’s ongoing efforts to streamline property tax collection. Kumar emphasized that residential property owners utilizing their properties for commercial purposes should promptly inform the authorities and pay taxes accordingly. Failure to do so will result in legal action and the imposition of triple tax penalties on the offenders.
This collaborative initiative between PMC and MSEDCL aims to rectify the misclassification of properties and ensure fair taxation practices. By cracking down on those falsely categorizing their properties, the PMC seeks to uphold tax compliance and create a level playing field for all property owners in Pune.
