Pune, 4th December 2021: If you are neglecting issues like less payment of stamp duty, and not paying the amount even after getting notice, etc. Then you must be careful because the Department of Registration and Stamp Duty has decided to take strict action against the stamp duty arrears. The department is currently gathering information on such arrears.

Stamp duty is being charged on documents of various types of buying and selling transactions including land and flats. Charges are reduced as per rules in bigger transactions. Though the sub-registrar does not have the assessment rights, they often fix the value. It has also come to notice that sometimes, the assessment by the sub-registrar was not done properly or it was deliberately underestimated and stamp duty is charged.

Notices were sent to concerned citizens after the investigation for paying the remaining amount. If not paid within a certain period of time, the penalty is levied at the rate of two percent per month. In many such cases, the penalty amount is higher than stamp duty, so many citizens are not ready to pay it. While sometimes it’s the builder’s fault, but the citizens also have to suffer because of it. Thousands of such cases are have come to light.

Speaking about this Shravan Hardikar, inspector general of registration, said, ”We are gathering information of such arrears and action will be taken accordingly.”
