Pune: Advisor to Prime Minister Dr Bibek Debroy appointed as Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics
Pune, 6th July 2024: The Servants of India Society (SIS) and Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics on Friday appointed Dr Bibek Debroy as the new Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE).
Dr Debroy is currently serving as the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) of India. He was earlier a member of the NITI Aayog, a think tank for the Government of India.
With a strong academic and professional background, Dr Debroy held notable positions at prestigious institutions including the Centre for Policy Research and the National Council of Applied Economic Research. His contributions across different fields of economics and policymaking have been very significant and impactful.
Further, his scholarly and extensive work translating ancient Indian epics has been prolific. In recognition of his work, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) awarded him “Sir R.G. Bhandarkar Smriti Puraskara” in 2023. He is also Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India in 2015.
Earlier in his career, he also worked at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune (1983-87).
The appointment of Dr. Bibek Debroy as Chancellor marks a significant milestone for Gokhale Institute. His leadership and vision are expected to further strengthen the institute’s role in education, research and policy making in India.
About Bibek Debroy
Bibek Debroy is an economist and was educated in Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur; Presidency College, Kolkata; Delhi School of Economics and Trinity College, Cambridge. Presently, he is Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM); and Chancellor, Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune, Government of Maharashtra. He has worked in Presidency College, Kolkata (1979-83), Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune (1983-87); Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi (1987-93); as the Director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project on legal reforms (1993-98); Department of Economic Affairs (1994-95); National Council of Applied Economic Research (1995-96); Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies (1997-2005); PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (2005-06); Centre for Policy Research (2007-15); Member, NITI Aayog (2015-19); and President, Indian Statistical Institute (151) (2018-22); He has authored/edited several books, papers and popular articles and has also been a Consulting/Contributing Editor with several newspapers.

He was awarded the Shriram Sanlam Award for Financial Journalism (in 2013), Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India (in 2015), D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) by KIIT University (in 2015), D.Phil. (Honoris Causa) by Amity University (in 2016), D.Phil. (Honoris Causa) by Jagran Lakecity University (in 2017), D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) by University of Engineering and Management (in 2018), Lifetime Achievement Award by US-India Business Summit (in 2016), Skoch Challenger Golden Jubilee Award (in 2017), Lifetime Achievement Award by Prestige Institute of Management and Research (in 2018) and “Bharatiya Manavata Vikas Puraskar” by Power Brand (in 2018). He was conferred the title of “Vachaspati” by the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (in 2018) and “Sir R.G. Bhandarkar Smriti Puraskara” by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI), Pune (in 2023).
About Servants of India Society
The Servants of India Society was founded in 1905 in Pune, Maharashtra, India, by Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Gokhale was a prominent Indian nationalist leader and member of the Indian National Congress. He believed that the key to India’s independence lay in education and social reform. He founded the SIS to train young people in India to serve the nation by becoming selfless and dedicated servants of the people.

The Gokhale Institute Of Politics And Economics, Pune, was established in 1930 by the Servants of India Society. It is the oldest research and training institute in Economics in the country. It is dedicated to research into the socio-economic dimensions of Indian society and carries forward the legacy of Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Gokhale was the one who founded the Servants of India Society in 1905. His rationale was to promote education, and develop capabilities among Indians to govern a newly independent nation. Over the decades, the Institute has established strong credentials in empirical and analytical research.
