Hinjawadi, 12th April 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad police have arrested a 29-year-old Afghan citizen for allegedly overstaying in India well beyond the validity of his visa, which expired over a year ago.

The foreign national, whose name has not been disclosed by authorities, was detained on Thursday during an inquiry at the Foreigners Registration Office under the Pune Police Commissionerate. He is currently being interrogated by law enforcement officials.

According to Sub-Inspector Datta Kale of Hinjawadi police station, the man entered India in 2018 on an education visa. “He initially pursued studies in Uttar Pradesh. After completing some academic programs, he moved between cities,” Kale said.

Police said the Afghan citizen’s visa expired on December 31, 2022, but he continued to remain in India. “Our preliminary probe indicates that he shifted to Delhi for nearly two years after his visa lapsed. He later arrived in Pune in February this year and had been staying in a residential society on Maan Road in Hinjawadi,” added Kale.

Officials have seized several documents from the accused, including his passport, an expired visa registration certificate, and a refugee identification card. “We have registered a case under appropriate provisions of the Foreigners Act. Further legal action will follow based on the results of the ongoing investigation,” Kale confirmed.
