Pune: After Deadly Accident, PMC Launches Six-Month Drive to Fix Accident Zone Between Katraj and Navale Bridge
Pune, 14th November 2025: In the wake of the horrific accident at Navale Bridge, senior officials from multiple agencies convened a high-level coordination meeting to finalise short-term, medium-term, and long-term safety measures for the accident-prone stretch.
The meeting included representatives from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Pune City Police, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and other departments.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram inspected the Navale Bridge area earlier in the morning and later chaired the inter-agency review meeting. He said that the situation around Navale Bridge remains “critical” and requires urgent intervention. To avoid delays, PMC has decided to independently carry out several works that typically fall under the National Highway’s jurisdiction.
Ram announced that all the planned measures will be completed within six months, with PMC acting as the lead coordinating agency.
Key Safety Measures Announced
- Rumble strips measuring 5 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm will be installed at every 500 metres from the Katraj Tunnel to Navale Bridge.
- CAT-Eye reflectors will be placed across all four lanes to improve night visibility.
- LED caution boards will be installed at strategic points.
- Heavy vehicles will be mandated to keep to the designated side of the highway, preventing them from moving too close to the service roads.
- Strict enforcement of the no-parking rule along the highway stretch.
- A compulsory speed limit of 40 kmph will be implemented between Katraj and Navale Bridge.
- Speeding vehicles will face immediate action through enforcement teams.
- Illegal vehicular entry around Navale Bridge will be curbed.
- Passenger vehicles stopping on the highway will be penalised.
Service Roads to Be Upgraded in Six Months
The PMC will also upgrade connectivity by improving the following service road stretches:
- Sus Khind to Radha Hotel
- Dukkar Khind to Mutha River
- Vadgaon Bridge to Navale Bridge
- Navale Bridge to Bhumkar Bridge
With multiple fatal accidents reported on this stretch in recent years, authorities believe these measures will significantly reduce the risk of crashes and help streamline traffic flow.
