Pune, 5th December 2022: Shyam Nikam, the project manager of a private infrastructure company in Pune, cheated his organisation by misappropriating material for road construction. He duped his colleagues for his benefit, resulting in poor construction of roads, states an FIR registered by Pune city police.

When the state government instructed the business, Roadway Solutions India Infra Limited, to make repairs to the damaged roadways, the fraud was discovered. The company then carried out an audit of the construction work that was completed under the employee’s supervision. Nikam, an Ahmednagar resident, was arrested on Saturday by the Kondhwa police after BK Sinha, the company’s director, filed a complaint.

According to Sinha’s allegation, Nikam was employed by the business from 2016, and November of last year as a project manager. As the in charge of the locations, he was in charge of finishing the tasks given to him. Nikam contributed to three projects, including the 72 km Satara-Rahimatpur-Mahabaleshwar road, the 30.396 km Khed-Sinnar bypass route, and the 48 km Mhaswad-Pandharpur road. Each of the three roads was built between 2017 and 2020. In November 2021, Nikam quit his employment without giving any notice. He didn’t give up the reins or resign either. Additionally, he withheld information on the costs incurred for the initiatives. The corporation discovered that Nikam had defrauded them in several ways after conducting a thorough audit of his work. The company allegedly discovered errors in the amount of diesel utilised on the Satara-Rahimatpur-Mahabaleshwar road, according to Sinha.

Nikam was meant to utilise 5,38,963 litres of fuel, but instead, he brought 6,18,945 litres, selling 79,582 litres and stealing Rs 75 lakh. Additionally, he sold bitumen valued at over Rs nine lakh as well as boulders for Rs 2.32 crore. He allegedly sold the cement for Rs 19.81 lakh in January 2021 after using less cement for road building. He also used less iron to build roads and set aside 10.76 tonnes of iron.

The Kondhwa Police have registered an FIR (first information report) under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code. Police are conducting further investigation.
