Pune: After Schoolgirls’ Fall, MLA Reveals Why Muddy Lohgaon Road Can’t Be Asphalted Yet
Lohgaon, 6th August 2026: Two schoolgirls and their grandfather slipped and fell into mud while walking to school on Diamond Water Park Road in Lohgaon on Thursday morning, due to the poor condition of the road.
Following the incident, MLA Bapusaheb Pathare said the delay in permanent road repairs was due to ongoing underground drainage work and assured residents that the road would be asphalted immediately after the pending work is completed.
According to local residents, the accident occurred on the muddy and pothole-ridden stretch of Diamond Water Park Road. One of the girls sustained minor injuries and reportedly went to school in tears, while the other, who had an examination the same day, also faced considerable inconvenience.
Residents Mahadev Navalkar, Yogesh Gade and Gitesh Khot rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. They helped the three victims, cleaned them up and ensured that the schoolgirls were able to continue to school.
Locals alleged that despite repeated complaints to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) regarding potholes, mud and the deteriorating condition of the road, only temporary repairs using gravel have been carried out instead of permanent asphalting. During the monsoon, the gravel reportedly turns into slush, making the road hazardous for pedestrians and motorists and leading to frequent accidents.
Residents demanded that PMC undertake permanent asphalting of the road instead of relying on temporary patchwork. They also urged the civic body to at least repair potholes properly until the road is reconstructed.
Expressing concern over the incident, residents said it was alarming that schoolchildren could not even reach school safely due to the road’s condition. They questioned whether the administration would act only after a major accident occurs.
MLA Pathare Explains Delay, Assures Permanent Road Work
Responding to public concerns, MLA Pathare said he was fully aware of the hardships being faced by residents, students and commuters using Diamond Water Park Road.
According to the MLA, the main water pipeline work beneath the road has been completed. However, underground drainage work has been delayed because of hard rock beneath the road and continuous rainfall. He said carrying out asphalting before completing the drainage work would require the road to be dug up again within two months, causing further inconvenience.
The MLA stated that he has been regularly following up with officials to ensure that the pending work is completed at the earliest. As a temporary measure, gravel and stone aggregate have been spread on the road, but the heavy movement of around 300 to 350 buses and water tankers every day causes the material to sink into the mud.
He expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to residents and assured that the remaining drainage work would be completed as soon as weather conditions permit, after which permanent road construction would begin immediately.
The MLA also appealed to residents to cooperate with the ongoing infrastructure work, stating that completing the underground drainage network is essential for ensuring long-term road safety and civic infrastructure.
