Pune: AI Cameras, Real-Time Parking System Planned to Tackle Chakan Traffic

Pune, 17th September 2026: Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi has directed various departments to prepare and implement a coordinated action plan to address traffic congestion, increasing industrial vehicle movement, potholes and unauthorised parking in the Chakan area.

At a high-level review meeting held at the district collectorate on Thursday, Dudi called for an integrated approach covering road repairs, traffic management at major junctions, alternative routes for heavy vehicles, parking facilities and technology-based traffic control.

The meeting was attended by MLA Babaji Kale, resident deputy collector Jyoti Kadam, officials from the public works department, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), traffic police and local administration, besides residents from the Chakan area.

Dudi directed officials to immediately repair potholes on connecting roads in Chakan, Talegaon, Borate Vasti and Bhosari and make them fit for traffic. Pending road works with the public works department should be prioritised and completed within the stipulated timeframe, he said. Roads under the jurisdiction of the zilla parishad should also be reviewed and necessary repairs undertaken.

The meeting stressed the use of artificial intelligence-based technology along with conventional measures for traffic management. Dudi directed officials to use surveillance cameras at major junctions not only for monitoring traffic but also for taking direct action against motorists violating traffic rules.

He also directed that fixed and mobile surveillance cameras be made available to the traffic police wherever required.

A separate survey of Chakan Chowk and other major junctions in the area will be carried out to study traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Based on the findings, officials have been asked to prepare an improved traffic management plan and examine the feasibility of elevated pedestrian crossings, underpasses, traffic islands and safer turning routes.

Officials were directed to take action against unauthorised parking on roads, including removing vehicles through towing vans, imposing fines and filing cases wherever necessary.

Dudi said industrial companies and transport associations should take responsibility for providing designated parking or waiting areas for their vehicles. Officials have also been asked to identify vacant land available in the area for parking and develop real-time monitoring systems at parking facilities.

Road improvement work on the Chakan-Shikrapur route will be carried out in phases. Dudi directed officials to complete traffic planning and other preparations before starting the work.

A longer alternative route should be identified for heavy vehicles, while one-way traffic arrangements should be considered for light vehicles wherever necessary, he said.

Safety measures at roadwork sites should comply with Indian road standards. Direction boards and traffic diversion maps should be installed two to three kilometres ahead of work sites. Officials were also asked to appoint safety consultants wherever necessary.

Dudi directed MIDC, the public works department and NHAI to coordinate and urgently shift electricity poles and wires after removal of encroachments.

Each department has been asked to identify the works under its jurisdiction, fix timelines and responsibilities, and regularly review the progress of the projects.

Residents from the Chakan area raised issues related to traffic, roads, parking and other infrastructure during the meeting. Dudi briefed them on the measures being undertaken by the administration to address their concerns.
