Pune Airport Now Equipped With AED To Help Sudden Cardiac Arrest Patients

Pune 4th Oct 2023: The airport authorities at Pune Airport have made Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) available inside the terminal to help patients with sudden cardiac arrest. The official details in this regard wers shared by Dhairyasheel Vandekar,  civil aviation specialist and analyst from the city who had raised this issue with Ministry of Civil Aviation in February this year.

“I am glad to inform that the Office of Ministry of Civil Aviation vide their communication dated 04 October, 2023 have informed me with regard to my demand for Critical Care medical facility at Pune airport that Fresh EOI has been published by AAI-Pune Airport on 30.8.2023 for Operation of MI Room at Pune Airport with requirement of 5 AED/PADS to be provided by Health Service Provider. I was also informed that AED has also been made available at the present MI room of Pune Airport” Vandekar said.

During my visit to Pune airport medical facility in February, 2023 I had observed that AED was not available at the facility and also the requirement of critical care equipments especially required for the ‘Golden Hour treatment’. Vide my email dated 23rd February, 2023 I brought to the notice of the Airport Director, AAI, Pune the necessity of such lifesaving equipments and facilities at the airport especially in view of increased cardiac incidences post-Covid in youth. I, later followed up this demand with Chairman, AAI, New Delhi and central Civil Aviation Minister, Government of India On 2nd September, 2023 I wrote to Hon. Prime Minister of our country Shri Narendra ji Modi reiterating this demand alongwith some other civil aviation requirements of Pune and Maharashtra, he added.

The AED at Pune Airport will benefit passengers as well as vendors, airport and airlines, security staff and other stakeholders at the airport in cardiac emergencies. A total of 120 such AEDs are installed at different places at the Mumbai Airport and the retrieval time of the nearest AED is not more than 3 minutes to ensure quick help to the patient.
