Pune, 21st December 2024: The Maharashtra government has approved a resolution to rename Pune’s Lohgaon Airport as Jagadguru Sant Shri Tukaram Maharaj International Airport. The decision was presented by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar during the Nagpur Winter Assembly session on Friday and was promptly passed.

The renaming honors Sant Tukaram Maharaj, a revered figure in Maharashtra and a central figure in the Warkari tradition. It is believed that Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s mother hailed from the Lohgaon area, strengthening the spiritual connection between the saint and Pune’s Warkari community.

Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol had earlier advocated for the name change, urging the State Government to draft a proposal and submit it to the Central Government for approval.

The resolution, passed under Rule 110 of the Maharashtra Assembly, recommends renaming the airport as Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport. The proposal will now be sent to the Central Government, which holds the authority for final approval.

The renaming reflects a broader effort to recognize Maharashtra’s cultural and spiritual heritage, with Sant Tukaram Maharaj being celebrated for his contributions to the Bhakti movement and his enduring influence on the state’s spiritual identity.
