Pune: ‘American Intel Officer’ Dupes Fashion Designer Of Rs 10 Lakh Saying She Is Under Watch By ‘RAW’

Pune, 9th July 2021: A 30-year-old man has been arrested by Pune city police for allegedly duping a female fashion designer of Rs 8.37 lakh and a laptop worth Rs 1.28 lakh. He had claimed to be from American Intelligence Agency and told the woman that she was under watch by RAW, India’s external intelligence agency.

Based on a complaint from a 28-year-old woman from Dhayari, an FIR has been registered at Chatushrungi police station. The accused has been identified as Amit Chavan (30) of Bavdhan.

According to police, the incident took place between April and July 7 in the Aundh area. The accused had approached the woman through the online matrimony app. He introduced himself as Rahul Patil and told her that he was an intelligence officer in the United States of America (USA) and that the USA, Dubai and India were under his jurisdiction. He told her that he has come to India for investigation.

“RAW is watching you. Destroy the information in your mobile phone and laptop. Fearing his ‘information’, she did as instructed and also handed over her sim card. He also took money from her from time to time, promising to supply material from his friend’s textile mill in Surat, Gujarat”, the woman told police. She stated that the accused took Rs 8.37 lakh and one laptop worth Rs 1.28 lakh.

A team under the guidance of DCP (Cyber crime & EOW) Bhagyashree Navatake arrested the accused from his in-law’s house in Baramati. He has duped more than three women, police said.

The accused has been handed over to Chatushrungi police station for further investigation. He has been charged for offences under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 170 (impersonating a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police Sub Inspector Prem Waghmore is investigating the case.
