Pune and Ghat Areas Braces for Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall, IMD Issues Impact-Based Forecast

Pune, 19th June 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, has issued a high-impact weather forecast warning of moderate to very heavy rainfall in Pune city and surrounding regions, including the Western Ghat areas, over the next 24 hours. The alert, released at 3:00 PM IST on June 19, also cautions about the potential for extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the ghats, leading to serious disruptions and safety risks.
Rainfall Recorded Over Past 24 Hours-
Between 8:30 AM on June 18 and 8:30 AM on June 19, Pune experienced light to moderate rainfall across several monitoring stations. The detailed observations are as follows:
Lavale: 64.0 mm
Chinchwad: 60.5 mm
NDA: 52.5 mm
Pashan: 32.9 mm
Shivajinagar: 31.3 mm
Lohegaon: 29.6 mm
Magarpatta: 19.0 mm
In the subsequent 6-hour period (from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM IST on June 19), the city continued to receive moderate rainfall, with the highest accumulation in:
Pashan: 30.2 mm
Lavale: 30.5 mm
NDA: 30.0 mm
Magarpatta: 28.0 mm
Chinchwad: 26.5 mm
Shivajinagar: 22.3 mm
Lohegaon: 22.4 mm
According to the IMD’s forecast (Valid until 8:30 AM, June 20)-
Pune and the surrounding areas are likely to experience generally overcast skies with moderate to heavy rainfall.
In Ghat regions, there is a possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
For June 20, the weather will likely remain cloudy with light to moderate rainfall, though heavy to very heavy spells are expected in ghat sections.
The IMD has warned of the following possible impacts in the region:
Reduced visibility and slippery roads, leading to major traffic disruptions
Moderate waterlogging in low-lying and river-adjacent areas
Falling of small tree branches due to wind and rain
Loosening of rocks, raising the risk of minor landslides and mudslides, particularly in the ghat (hill) areas
IMD’s impact-based advisory urges residents and commuters to:
Avoid non-essential travel during periods of intense rainfall
Drive slowly and cautiously due to reduced visibility and slippery conditions
Avoid visiting ghat areas, which are vulnerable to landslides and falling debris
IMD has urged citizens to remain alert, follow updates from the IMD and local disaster response agencies, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of intense monsoon activity.
