Pune, 4th July 2026: Amid growing public queries over the impact of E20 (20 % ethanol-blended petrol) on vehicle performance and fuel efficiency, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) on Saturday said all E20-compatible vehicles undergo extensive testing and validation before they are approved for commercial use.

At a press conference held at its headquarters in Kothrud, ARAI Director Dr Reji Mathai and senior officials said the transition to E20 fuel has been backed by comprehensive engineering studies and testing carried out by automobile manufacturers in line with national and international standards.

“Validation and verification of E20 fuel for vehicles are subjected to extensive durability, performance, and reliability tests under various operating conditions to ensure seamless performance and long-term engine health,” the panel emphasized. These evaluations assess the impact of ethanol blending on critical vehicle systems, including the engine, fuel lines, and other components, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards” the ARAI officials said.

According to ARAI, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have tested BS VI vehicles designed for E20 fuel over 40,000 to 60,000 km through a combination of laboratory and field trials before introducing them to the market.

Addressing concerns over fuel economy, the agency said laboratory evaluations indicate that E20 fuel causes only a 2 to 6% reduction in fuel efficiency. It added that actual fuel consumption on the road depends on several variables, including driving style, traffic conditions, road quality and the vehicle’s maintenance condition.

ARAI also advised vehicle owners to adhere to the service schedules recommended by their respective manufacturers and have their vehicles inspected at authorised service centres to maintain optimum performance.

The agency said the rollout of E20-compatible BS VI vehicles is a significant milestone in India’s ethanol-blending programme, aimed at reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels and promoting a more sustainable transport ecosystem.

Reassuring consumers, ARAI said the vehicles have been validated through rigorous engineering and testing processes to ensure reliability, safety and durability, while enabling the automobile industry to support the country’s long-term clean energy goals.
