Pune: Birthday Celebration Turns Violent: Teen Injured After Cousin Accidentally Fires Gun In Hadapsar; Investigation Underway

Hadapsar, 30th May 2025: A birthday celebration in the Canal Road area of Hadapsar took a violent turn Thursday (29th May) night when a young man accidentally fired a pistol, injuring his cousin. The bullet, fired into the air in an act of reckless bravado, pierced through the victim’s shoulder, turning a moment of festivity into a police case. The said incident occurred around 8.15 pm.

The injured youth, identified as Vaibhav Sharwan Gawli, a delivery boy residing in Keshavnagar, Mundhwa. According to the information received,‌ Vaibhav was riding pillion on a two-wheeler with his cousins, Sumit Khawale and Basavraj Sutar on two seperate two-wheelers. According to police reports, Sumit—son of an active worker associated with the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena—was illegally carrying a firearm. During the ride toward a birthday party at Pandhare Mala Canal Road, the weapon was accidentally discharged.

The bullet struck Vaibhav in the left shoulder, causing a serious injury. He was initially rushed to a private hospital but was later transferred to Sassoon General Hospital. Hospital authorities promptly informed the Mundhwa Police, who began a formal investigation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5), Rajkumar Shinde, confirmed the incident and stated, “The injured youth, Vaibhav Gawli, is currently undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The accused, Sumit Khawale, is his maternal cousin. We have seized the motorcycle and the illegal firearm used in the incident. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.”
