Pune: Black Water Flowing Into Pavana River in Kasarwadi Sparks Pollution Concerns
Pimpri Chinchwad, 18th September 2026: A fresh pollution concern has emerged along the Pavana river, with a large quantity of blackish, chemical-laced water reportedly entering the riverbed behind the Dutta Temple in Kasarwadi.
The dark-coloured discharge is mixing with the river’s relatively clear water, raising questions about its source and composition. Residents and activists have called for an immediate inspection and testing of water samples to determine whether sewage or industrial effluents are entering the river.
The source of the discharge is yet to be established. Officials will need to trace the flow through nearby drains, sewage channels and adjoining areas before determining its origin or identifying those responsible.
Environmental concerns have also been raised over its possible impact on aquatic life. Continuous discharge of polluted water could affect fish, aquatic plants and other organisms by altering the river’s water quality.
Residents around the Dutta Temple area have also expressed concern over the possibility of foul odour and its impact on public health if the discharge continues.
Social activist Vikas Lande said the discharge could be industrial wastewater from the MIDC area, but stressed that this could be confirmed only after laboratory testing. He demanded that civic officials collect samples, trace the source and immediately stop any polluted discharge into the river.
A Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation official said the civic body had received information about the blackish water entering the Pavana river. “Staff will be sent to the spot for an immediate inspection. The source of the discharge will be traced and water samples will be collected for further testing, if required,” said Vinay Ohol, co-city engineer, PCMC.
