Pune: Bounced property tax cheques? PMC warns of legal action against defaulters
Pune, 20th March 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to initiate legal action against property owners who have failed to clear their dues despite notices being issued over bounced cheques submitted towards property tax payments.
According to civic officials, property tax bills are issued annually and it is the responsibility of property owners to ensure timely payment through designated civic offices and facilitation centres.
The administration said that since April 1, 2025, several taxpayers opted to pay their dues via cheques. However, a number of these cheques were bounced due to reasons such as insufficient balance in the respective bank accounts, errors in cheque details and other technical issues.
Officials said notices have already been served to such defaulters under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Despite this, many have not cleared their pending dues, leading to financial losses for the civic body.
The PMC has now decided to initiate legal proceedings against such defaulters and has urged citizens whose cheques have bounced to immediately deposit the outstanding amount to avoid further action. The civic body has also warned that failure to comply within the stipulated time will invite action as per the law.
