Pune: Brigadier Ajit Meelu Granted Pre-Arrest Bail In Abetting Woman Army Officer’s Suicide Case

Pune, 9th November 2021: Brigadier Ajit Meelu, who has been booked by Pune city police, for allegedly abetting the suicide of a woman Army officer (Lt Col rank), has been granted anticipatory bail by the Bombay High Court.

Police said that the accused was allegedly blackmailing her with objectionable photos and videos. He had threatened to make them viral on social media. The incident took place between 2019 and October 12, 2021.

On October 13 morning, the woman was found hanging in her room at the Military Intelligence Training School and Depot (MINTSD) in Wanowrie. She was a native of Uttarakhand and was posted in Jaipur. She had come to Pune for a training purpose.

Based on a complaint from her husband who is also an Army officer (Colonel), an FIR has been registered against her former superior officer Brigadier Ajit Meelu at Wanowrie Police Station. He has been booked for an offence under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Meelu is currently posted at Army Training Command in Shimla.

“Brigadier Meelu took advantage of her loneliness and trapped her in a love affair. He promised to marry her and made videos of physical relations. He had made videos and clicked photos of the act. He was blackmailing her after threatening to make them public. She got frightened and died by suicide”, police said.

Fearing arrest by police, Brig Meelu had filed an anticipatory bail application in the Bombay High Court.

“Brig Meelu was called by the police on 28th, 29th and 31st October 2021. His laptop and mobile phone are seized by the police. The said articles were sent for chemical analysis and a report is awaited. In view of the allegations made in the complaint, it appears that the deceased and applicant were having sexual relations. The applicant has cooperated with the police”, the court stated while granting him the pre-arrest bail.

In the event of the arrest, Brig Meelu has been directed to be released on interim bail on furnishing a personal bond (PR) bond in the sum of Rs 15,000 in the like amount. He has to attend the Wanowrie police station thrice a week i.e.Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10 am to 11 am until further matter.

The next date of hearing in the high court is on November 29.
