Aundh, 26th February 2023: Unidentified burglars ransacked four flats in Nirmal Housing society located on DP road in Aundh, Pune, on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

Based on a complaint from society resident Rahul Bendgude (27), Chaturshrungi police station has registered an FIR.

Accord to police, a car, gold jewellery, a television set, and other household items worth Rs 2.20 lakh were stolen.

Dr R Raj Rao, former head of the English department at Pune University, also resides in the society. However, he was out of town visiting Hyderabad, leaving his flat unoccupied. Rahul, who is acquainted with him, was in the professor’s house until 10 pm, locked the flat, and returned to his own flat located in the same building.

The next morning, when Rahul revisited Raj Rao’s flat, he discovered that the lock was broken, and household items and clothes were scattered everywhere. Thieves had obtained keys to the car from the house and escaped with it from the parking area, along with gold jewellery.

Additionally, the burglars broke into three other flats and stole a television set from one of them. The Chaturshrungi police have registered a case under sections 380, 379, and 457 of the Indian Penal Code. Although the society’s CCTV footage was unavailable, the police are investigating other CCTV cameras installed on the road and in other locations to aid in their inquiry.

“It’s a shame and is highly distressful that burglaries of this kind should happen in an upmarket neighborhood like Aundh. Where is the security? How can citizens ensure that their life and properties are safe?
The police and civic body should make it mandatory for all housing societies in the city to install CCTV cameras and employ night watchmen. I truly hope authorities nab the culprits soon. I was travelling on work as I frequently do. My car was stolen while I was away and my flat was broken into. I had to cut short my visit and rush back home. Will only be able to assess the extent of the damage when I get home. Needless to say, I am in a highly anxious state”, Raj Rao said.

Senior Police Inspector Balaji Pandhare, in-charge of Chaturshrungi police station, said, “Though CCTV footage is not available, our team is working to nab the burglars.”
