Pimpri Chinchwad, 26th February 2023: A Class 6 student from Balaji English Medium School in Chikhali was severely beaten up by the principal, Jyotsna Phalke, in a case of corporal punishment. The incident occurred after a tiff over the student’s tiffin with one of his classmates on February 24.

The victim’s thumb was fractured, and his body bore several injury marks. The Chikhali police station (Pimpri Chinchwad police) has registered a case against Phalke, as corporal punishment is strictly prohibited under Section 17 of the Right to Education Act, 2009.

The Act imposes an absolute bar on physical punishment and mental harassment of children and prescribes disciplinary action to be taken against the guilty person in accordance with the service rules applicable to such person. When the victim came back to his classroom after using the washroom during recess, he found that his tiffin was eaten up by one of his classmates, leading to a quarrel between the two.

The principal entered the classroom and started beating up the boy whose tiffin was eaten, after which his parents were called. The parents were not informed about the corporal punishment meted out to their child, and they only learned about the incident later. The boy’s mother lodged a police complaint after learning about the incident from her son’s injuries.

She stated that her son was punished without verifying the situation, and he was ordered to stand outside the class the whole day touching his toes. The parents observed the injuries on their son’s body and realised that his right-hand thumb was fractured after taking him to the hospital for treatment. They approached the police after obtaining a medical report.

The victim’s mother expressed concern over her son’s ability to write his final exams, which will start at the end of March.

Police are further investigating the case.
