Pune, 27th May 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a tender worth ₹43.20 crore for road sweeping services across key city areas, including Nagar Road, Airport Road, and Alandi Road. Under the new agreement, the selected contractor will deploy road sweeper machines to clean roads, pedestrian pathways, and dividers in Zone 1 for the next seven years.

This contract is part of PMC’s broader ₹182 crore plan to mechanize street cleaning operations across the city’s four zones. Road sweeping by machines began in Pune in 2017, covering major roads across zones 1 to 4. The previous contract ended in 2024, and the civic body has since been working to finalize a new round of tenders, which faced delays due to revisions in estimated costs and procedural clarifications.

Earlier, the civic body had already approved tenders worth around ₹139 crore for Zones 2, 3, and 4. However, the tender process for Zone 1 became contentious after BVG India Limited emerged as the eligible bidder, raising concerns due to past controversies involving the company.

BVG India Limited had faced blacklisting proceedings in the Indore Municipal Corporation and had been penalized at other locations as well. The Solid Waste Management Department initially sought to disqualify the company, citing nondisclosure of these actions. The matter was referred to PMC’s Vigilance and Legal departments for review. While the Vigilance Department stated that the responsibility for qualification decisions rests with the respective department, the Legal Department noted that the Indore case is sub judice and emphasized that no conclusive blacklisting had been imposed in other regions.

After receiving explanations from BVG India and legal clearance, PMC Commissioner and Additional Commissioner approved the proposal, which was subsequently sanctioned by the Standing Committee.

Under the newly approved contract, BVG India will be responsible for sweeping operations across several critical stretches in Zone 1, including Shastri Nagar Chowk, Kharadi Bypass, Alandi Road, Airport Road, Vishrantwadi, Mundhwa Bridge, Kalyani Nagar, and other high-traffic areas.

Speaking on the development, Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B. P. said, “The tender for Zone 1 has been approved after due legal consultation and verification of facts.”
With increasing urbanization and traffic across Pune, the PMC is under pressure to ensure cleaner roads and improved public hygiene. The civic body now hopes that mechanized sweeping across all four zones will help maintain cleanliness standards and reduce manual labor dependency.

However, concerns remain over contractor accountability and monitoring, especially in light of past performance issues. Civic activists have urged PMC to maintain strict oversight to ensure public funds are used effectively and the promised services are delivered efficiently.
