Pune: Car Runs Over Man Sleeping By Road In Balewadi; Driver Misleads Police

Pune, 21st September 2026: A 54-year-old casual worker sleeping by the roadside was run over by a car at Mamta Chowk in Balewadi around 5.30am on Friday. The driver allegedly took the injured man to a hospital but initially told police that he had found him unconscious on the road.

The deceased was identified as Baba Baburao Chavan, a Katraj resident who worked as a casual labourer and often slept on footpaths along isolated roads in the city.

Baner police said the car driver, a techie from Baner, was negotiating a left turn when another vehicle passed close to his car. While trying to avoid a collision, he sharply turned left and ran over Chavan.

The driver then picked up Chavan and drove towards an Aundh hospital. On Baner Road, he encountered a police patrol team and allegedly told them that he had found Chavan unconscious on the road and was taking him for treatment.

Chavan died at the hospital. Police later obtained details of the driver and the deceased. The driver took the police to another location, claiming that he had found Chavan there.

Police then tracked the car’s route and identified the actual accident spot. CCTV footage of the incident was also recovered.

Baner police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver and launched a search for him.
