Pune: CCTV Captures Shocking Cat Abuse Incident in Baner; Animal Welfare Group Files Complaint
Baner, 2nd July 2025: A distressing case of animal cruelty has come to light from Baner, where a woman was caught on CCTV violently assaulting a pet cat inside a residential building. The footage, which quickly spread across social media platforms, shows the woman repeatedly slamming the cat on the floor and then kicking it across the corridor.
The video sparked immediate outrage among residents, animal welfare activists, and social media users. In response, Nitesh Khare, an animal rights advocate associated with the Society for Animal Safety, lodged a non-cognizable (NC) complaint with the police against the accused.
“We were shocked when we saw the video. I reached out to the woman to question her actions, but she reacted aggressively and used abusive language,” said Khare, who took to Instagram to share the video and spread awareness.
In his social media post, Khare wrote:
“Trigger Warning: Animal Abuse. A student from Chhattisgarh, currently living in Pune with her partner, was seen brutally assaulting a pet cat in a housing society. We immediately alerted the police, who took prompt action and ensured that the cat was rescued. The animal is now safe and will soon be shifted to a foster home where it can receive proper care.”
He also appealed to the public to speak out against such acts of violence and show empathy toward animals.
“Pets are part of our families. They deserve love, not cruelty. If you witness any abuse, please don’t stay silent. Report it. We must build a world that’s safe and kind for all beings,” Khare added.
Police confirmed that the individuals involved were briefly detained for questioning and later released after being counseled about the legal and moral consequences of their actions. While no arrests were made, the case remains under watch, and further legal steps may be taken if necessary.

The identity of the accused has been withheld by authorities to protect her personal safety and future career, as the matter continues to draw public attention.
Animal welfare organisations across the city have renewed their demand for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws, calling the incident a stark reminder of the abuse many domesticated animals silently endure.
