Pune, 17th June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) City Improvement Committee on Tuesday unanimously approved a key proposal to initiate the process of preparing a Development Plan (DP) for the 23 villages that were earlier merged into the civic limits.

The decision marks the formal beginning of the planning process for the newly included areas, which are expected to witness significant urban growth in the coming years.

Under the provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966, the civic body will now issue a notification declaring its intention to prepare a Development Plan for these villages. Aniruddha Pavaskar, City Engineer and a qualified town planner from the PMC’s Town Planning Department, will be appointed as the designated Town Planning Officer for the project, the officials said.

Civic officials said the Development Plan will serve as a roadmap for the planned, balanced and sustainable growth of the newly merged areas. The exercise will involve earmarking land for roads, public amenities, civic infrastructure, green spaces and other facilities while taking into account future population growth and urban development needs.

Officials said the plan would help prevent haphazard development and ensure that the expansion of the city is supported by adequate infrastructure and public services.

City Improvement Committee chairperson Smita Vaste said the decision was crucial for Pune’s long-term urban planning.

“The preparation of a Development Plan for the 23 newly merged villages was essential to ensure their scientific and citizen-centric development. By approving this proposal, the committee has taken an important step towards guiding the future growth of these areas. We remain committed to ensuring planned, inclusive and sustainable development while addressing the expectations and future needs of citizens,” Vaste said.
