Pimpri Chinchwad, 11th January 2024: In response to concerns about rising pollution levels in the Indrayani, Pavana, and Mula rivers within its jurisdiction, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has commenced a comprehensive technical inspection. The initiative, carried out by experts from the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP), aims to identify pollution sources and implement long-term strategies to address the issue.

Officials from the PCMC anticipate a detailed report from the CoEP experts by June, shedding light on the changing pollution levels and their origins. The municipal corporation approved a fund of Rs 10 lakh during a standing committee meeting to finance the inspection.

Sanjay Kulkarni, Joint City Engineer of PCMC, emphasized that the study would provide valuable insights into understanding pollution dynamics and its sources. This decision follows assurances from the state’s Chief Minister and both Deputy Chief Ministers to take action against the increasing pollution in the Indrayani, particularly evident in the presence of a toxic foam layer persisting for the last nine days.

However, the PCMC’s approach has faced criticism from experts who argue that the municipal corporation should address existing pollution sources rather than investing in inspections.
