Anand Prakash Pardeshi (39, a resident of Ravet), with the assistance of Adv. Shreya Guha, has filed a complaint at the Ravet Police Station, Pimpri Chinchwad police. A case has been registered against an unknown person under BNS Section 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) and relevant sections of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960. Over the years, various pet organizations have also served notices or letters to the Tropica Housing Society in Ravet.

According to police reports, complainant Pardeshi, a cardholder and member of various pet organizations including the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and People for Animals (PFA), was also looking after the community dog of Tropica Housing Society. On 13th November, Pardeshi witnessed the dog being brutally beaten by an unknown person and found it in an unconscious state. Pardeshi took the dog to a doctor, who revealed that the dog, named Rambo, was seriously injured, with injuries that would mar its life permanently.

Sources have informed Punekar News that the Tropica Housing Society has received legal notices and letters from pet organizations for failing to provide proper care and basic necessities for the community dog. Past notices have been sent by Society for Animal Safety (SAS) India, Shashwat Foundation, and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Pune, along with letters regarding the feeding point from the Pune District Deputy Registrar. In addition to these, past instances of cruelty have also been reported, involving both the dog and the individuals who have been taking care of it, allegedly at the hands of housing society residents.

The neglect by society, coupled with the violent attack on the dog, has sparked outrage among animal lovers. As of now, the dog is recovering and showing improvement. However, doctors advise that it should not be left on the streets and requires full-time care. The dog continues to struggle with injuries that will affect it for the rest of its life. Police Constable Shelar is investigating the case.

What Is a Community Dog?

A community dog refers to a stray dog that is cared for by a community, typically through feeding, vaccination, and sterilization efforts led by residents or welfare associations. These dogs often live in specific areas, and while they may be familiar and safe to the community, they can sometimes pose risks like biting or aggression. Community dogs also include trained dogs used in therapy or healthcare settings to assist patients by providing emotional support and helping them engage in activities. The Delhi High Court affirmed their right to food, urging caution to prevent harm. The Bombay High Court emphasized citizens’ responsibility towards these dogs.
