Pune, 16th May 2025: Doctors at Pune’s Sassoon Hospital successfully performed a complex endoscopic surgery to remove six large meat bones lodged in the food pipe of a 52-year-old intellectually disabled patient. The patient, originally from Kolhapur, is currently stable and undergoing treatment.

The patient experienced difficulty chewing a piece of meat while eating, causing the bones to get stuck in his throat. This led to symptoms such as vomiting, throat pain, and trouble swallowing food and water. After initial treatment at a local hospital proved ineffective, he was referred to Sassoon Hospital in Pune.

Upon admission, the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department immediately began treatment. A CT scan revealed six large bones lodged in the upper part of the esophagus. Due to the number and varying sizes of the bones, the surgery was particularly challenging.

Under the leadership of Professor and Head of Department Dr. Rahul Telang, along with Dr. Rahul Thakur, Dr. Pranit Khandagle, Dr. Akruti Nemani, Dr. Priyanka Shinde, and other team members, an endoscopic procedure called ‘Esophagoscopy’ was successfully carried out to extract the bones.

Anesthesia specialists Dr. Surekha Shinde, Dr. Vijay Patil, Dr. Shree Mal Prasad, and nurse Damayanti Jadhav played crucial roles during the operation. The swift availability of the necessary surgical equipment and facilities was made possible through the support of Sassoon Hospital’s Dean Dr. Eknath Pawar and Medical Superintendent Dr. Yalappa Jadhav.

The patient is now reported to be stable and continues to receive medical care.
