Pune Court To Issue Permanent Disability Certificates; Easing Compensation Process For Accident Victims

Pune,13th March 2025: In cases of road accidents leading to permanent disability, victims must present a disability certificate to claim compensation from the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT). This certificate determines the extent of disability, which in turn influences the compensation amount. However, many doctors hesitate to issue these certificates due to the requirement of appearing in court as witnesses, resulting in delays in compensation claims.
To address this issue, the Pune District Legal Services Authority, in collaboration with the Motor Accident Tribunal and the Orthopedic Surgeons Society, has launched an initiative to issue disability certificates directly at the Shivajinagar Court. Over the past five years, 388 accident victims have benefited from this process.
Road accident victims often incur medical expenses running into lakhs of rupees, placing a heavy financial burden on them and their families. If the primary breadwinner suffers a disability, the entire household faces severe economic hardship. The reluctance of doctors to issue disability certificates, fearing court summons, has led to prolonged delays in compensation claims. This initiative aims to resolve that challenge efficiently.
On Tuesday (1th March), a medical team conducted examinations of 50 accident victims at the Pune District Court’s Ashoka Hall, issuing them permanent disability certificates. The event was attended by Principal District Judge and Legal Services Authority Chairman Mahendra Mahajan, Chief Judge of the MACT Bhushan Kshirsagar, and Authority Secretary Judge Sonal Patil.
Additionally, a team of nine expert doctors, including Dr. Parag Sancheti, chairman of Sancheti Hospital, assessed the victims and issued the necessary certificates. With this new system, doctors are no longer required to appear in court as witnesses, streamlining the compensation process for victims. Judge Mahajan emphasized that these certificates will now serve as sufficient proof, allowing accident victims to receive their rightful compensation without unnecessary legal delays.
