Pune, 6th April 2021: A 77-year-old Covid-19 positive woman died on Monday due to the unavailability of a bed. The deceased has been identified as Shakuntala Baban Sarode, a resident of the Janwadi area in the city.

She had a medical history of diabetes and high blood pressure. She also survived a heart attack previously. She was living with her family including two sons and their wives.

Speaking about the incident her son Sanjay Sarode said, “My mother stayed at home all the time, except going for the morning walk. She had a fever. We took her to the hospital, and the doctor suggested a corona test. We did the test and she was found positive on Sunday. On the same day, she had a breathing problem, so we asked for a bed at the municipal helpline centre. We even went to the Ghole road ward office to enquire about the bed but didn’t get a positive response from anywhere.

On Monday morning her health condition worsened. At last, she died, in the afternoon. Many people including a social and political activist in the area were searching for the bed, but couldn’t get it. The activist expressed grief over the death of the woman and posted ‘Sorry Sarode Mavshi’ on social media, as they were unable to save her.

Uday wagh, a social worker from the area said, “We tried a lot to get the bed but could not get it. Now we can only appeal to people to take care of themselves as the number of patients is rising, and beds are not available.”
