Pune, 25th January 2024: Gaurav Digvijay Singh Pandey, a 28-year-old resident of New Delhi, has been arrested for impersonating an Income Tax Commissioner on the Bumble dating app and engaging in fraudulent activities.
Pandey had allegedly connected with the victim through the online dating app Bumble, falsely presenting himself as an Income Tax Raid Commissioner in Delhi. Under the guise of a romantic relationship, he purportedly lured the victim into a false marriage, subsequently subjecting her to torture. Afterwards, Pandey allegedly absconded by turning off his mobile phone.
A case under Section 376 (Rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at the Bundgarden Police Station in Pune on November 1, 2023, following the victim’s complaint.
Upon conducting a technical investigation, it was revealed that Pandey had been using his false identity as a government official not only in New Delhi but also in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Pune police team, under the guidance of their superiors, travelled to New Delhi to effect the arrest.
Pandey is also accused of defrauding another complainant of Rs. 40 lakhs by providing fake gold bonds from the RBI Bank to her daughter and presenting a fraudulent government job appointment letter to the victim. Another case under IPC sections 406 (Criminal Breach of Trust) and 420 (Cheating and Dishonestly Inducing Delivery of Property) has been registered against him at the Sinhagad police station in Pune.
Officials have urged individuals who may have been similarly deceived by Pandey to come forward and report such incidents to the police.
The operation leading to the arrest was conducted under the guidance of the Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region), Pravin Kumar Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2), Smartana Patil, ACP (Lashkar Division) Sanjay Surve, and Senior Police Inspector of Bund Garden Police Station, Sandipan Pawar. The team executing the operation included Sub-Inspector Ravindra Gawade, Sub-Inspector Vaishali Tangde, and police personnel Mohan Kale, Anil Kusalkar, Sanjay Vanve, Shivaji Sark, Manoj Bhokare, Gyana Bade, and Vishal Mohite.
