Pune: Crook Defrauds Numerous Women In City With Promise Of Marriage, Jailed
Pune, 16th October 2022: After being in jail for almost a month, a man who met a woman on Shaadi.com and defrauded her out of lakhs of rupees is now in the Yerwada jail. The most recent victim to file a complaint with the Chandan Nagar police on Friday brought the total number of cases against him to three. However, more of his victims are coming out with allegations.
According to the police, the accused, Shantanu Mahajan (age 30) of Wadgaon Sheri, also defrauded two other women, one from Yerwada and one from Mundhwa. The Chandanagar police claimed that the accused’s method of operation consisted of finding women on marriage websites, befriending them, earning their trust, and then using their mobile phones to obtain loans by telling them heartbreaking stories, finally transferring the entire sum to his account.
A 29-year-old software engineer described her ordeal, saying, “The accused befriended me through Shaadi.com then defrauded me using the same method. Later, he eventually blocked my number after refusing to answer my calls whenever I tried to call him.’’
Even though the accused has been in jail for a month, numerous women who have been duped by him continue to come forward to the police. He is the accused in two cases with the Chandanagar police station, as well as cases with the Mundhwa and Yerwada police.
According to police inspector Rajendra Landge, IPC section 420 was used to record the complaints.
