Pune: Debris Dumping Continues In Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary In Yerwada

Yerwada, 20th November 2021: No action has been taken by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) except to lodge a complaint with the police in the case of debris being dumped at Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. On the other hand, the work of throwing debris here is still going on smoothly for half a day. Citizens are alleging collusion between the municipal officials and the contractors.

To wake up the administration in this regard, an agitation was organized by Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary Rescue Committee on 30th October at Gunjan Chowk. The agitation was called off after Additional Municipal Commissioner Kunal Khemnar and political leaders assured immediate action.

The municipal administration has done nothing but issue notices to the culprits and lodge complaints against them. At that time, Khemnar had said that he would immediately remove the debris from the nullah and restore its flow. However, it is still a long way to go before the nullah can be restored. Therefore, day by day, river basins and sanctuary areas are being swallowed up by land mafia.

Dr. Sameer Nikam, a member of the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary Rescue Committee, said the municipality had in its complaint to the Yerwada police station mentioned the accused as the owners of the land concerned. But these people have nothing to do with this place.

This whole pattern shows that the municipal administration is backing the culprits. But we will not remain silent and our agitation will continued, he added.
