Pune: Diamond Trader Fakes Own Kidnapping Over Rs 2 Crore Debt Pressure

Bibvewadi, 8th March 2025: The alleged kidnapping of a diamond trader for a ₹2 crore ransom took an unexpected turn when the trader himself appeared at the Bibvewadi police station on Friday evening. Upon questioning, he admitted to staging his own abduction due to harassment from creditors.
The trader, a resident of a housing society in Bibwewadi, left home on Monday after dropping his daughter at school. He told his wife that he was heading to the Cantonment area for work but never returned. Shortly after, his wife received a call from an unknown person claiming that her husband had been kidnapped for a ₹2 crore ransom.
As soon as the police were alerted, an intensive investigation was launched. The trader’s two-wheeler was later found abandoned near Navale Bridge on the bypass road, deepening the mystery. With no further leads, multiple police teams, under the supervision of Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, were deployed to trace him.
The search efforts extended to Mumbai and Bengaluru, but tracking him proved difficult as his phone remained switched off. However, on Friday afternoon, the trader briefly turned on his phone to contact his sister before switching it off again. By evening, he walked into the Bibvewadi police station and revealed the truth.
During questioning, he admitted to being under immense financial strain after borrowing money from multiple sources. Fearing pressure from creditors, he decided to disappear. After leaving Navale Bridge, he traveled to Ravet, then to Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, and later stayed for two days at lodges in Mumbai Central and Khar.
