Pune Division Generates Rs 67.55 Crore Revenue from 964 Special Train Trips; Pune-Danapur Route Tops Chart
Reported by Amit Singh
Pune, 25th December 2025: In a massive operational exercise to manage year-round passenger surges, the Pune Division of Central Railway operated 964 trips of special trains, generating a cumulative revenue of ₹67,55,63,517 (approximately ₹67.55 crore). The special services facilitated the travel of 5,85,862 passengers, significantly augmenting capacity on high-demand routes connecting Maharashtra to northern and eastern India.
The successful execution of these nearly 1,000 additional trips stands out as a case study in workforce efficiency, as the division managed these operations without additional manpower, despite facing significant staff shortages.
Operational Efficiency Amid Resource Crunch
A senior division official revealed that the entire operation was executed using the existing workforce, despite a 20% to 25% shortage of resources across critical departments. “Every department including Electrical, Mechanical, Operating, and Commercial is currently working with 20-25% fewer staff than sanctioned. Despite these constraints, the teams worked in coordination to maintain the maintenance, safety, and operation of these special rakes alongside the scheduled express trains,” the official stated. This intensified utilization of existing human resources ensured that rolling stock was examined, cleaned, and deployed on time to meet passenger demand.
Strategic Planning and Execution
Senior officials credited the revenue milestone to precise planning that balanced operational feasibility with commercial demand.
Ramdas Bhise, Senior Divisional Operations Manager (Sr. DOM), Pune Division, said, “Operational planning for these 964 trips involved intricate pathing to ensure special trains could run without disrupting the punctuality of scheduled express services. By utilizing satellite terminals and maximizing rake utilization, we were able to run additional services efficiently during peak demand periods.”
Hemant Kumar Behera, Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Pune Division, added, “The operation of these special trains was planned meticulously to cater to the heavy passenger demand on long-distance routes. By monitoring waitlists and traffic patterns, we were able to deploy services where they were needed most, ensuring passengers could reach their destinations while optimizing our revenue generation.”
Pune-Danapur Sector Drives Earnings
The operational data highlights the Pune-Danapur (DNR) sector as the financial backbone of the special operations. The highest single contributor was Train No. 01449 (Pune to Danapur), which ran 67 trips and carried 56,385 passengers, earning ₹6.77 crore. A secondary service, Train No. 01481, conducted 25 trips on the same route, generating an additional ₹3.70 crore.
Significant traffic was also recorded on the Pune-Gorakhpur (GKP) route, where Train No. 01415 operated 65 trips, transporting 47,861 passengers and yielding ₹5.75 crore.
Decongestion via Satellite Terminals: Khadki, Hadapsar, and Daund
To alleviate the logistical pressure on Pune Junction, the division activated its satellite terminals for long-distance special trains.
Khadki (KK): This terminal played a vital role for westbound and northbound traffic. Train No. 09323 (Khadki to Indore) was a top performer, conducting 9 trips with a high occupancy of 139% and earning ₹89 Lakh. Additionally, Train No. 04726 (Khadki to Hisar) generated ₹71.09 Lakh across 5 trips.
Hadapsar (HDP): Services to Hisar (HSR) saw robust demand. Train No. 04726 (HDP to HSR) ran 11 trips, carrying 14,517 passengers and earning ₹1.56 crore.
Daund (DD): The Daund-Ajmer (AII) special (Train No. 09626) recorded an exceptional 175.9% occupancy across 9 trips, contributing ₹1.32 crore to the division’s earnings.
High Occupancy Rates
Reflecting the acute need for these services, several trains operated with occupancy rates well above 100%, indicating the clearing of waitlisted passengers and heavy usage of unreserved coaches.
Pune-Nagpur (Train 01469): Recorded an occupancy of 155.41% during peak runs.
Pune-Gorakhpur (Train 01415): Maintained an occupancy of 148.1%.
Pune-Nizamuddin (Train 01491): Recorded 145.38% occupancy with earnings of ₹1.88 crore from 12 trips.
