Pune, 19th January 2022: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has appealed to the public not to respond to any of the fake messages like, ‘the power supply will be cut off at 9.30 pm tonight due to the non-update of last month’s electricity bill. Citizens should immediately contact the accompanying personal mobile number’.

MSEDCL also clarified that they do not send any such ‘SMS’ or WhatsApp messages to the public.

MSEDCL further informs that citizens should not respond to ‘SMS’ or WhatsApp messages or calls sent from different personal mobile numbers but related to MSEDCL. If a link is sent from a personal mobile number to pay the bill, it is advisable to ignore it altogether. Otherwise, it is likely to lead to financial fraud. MSEDCL sends ‘SMS’ through the system only to registered customers with mobile numbers and its Sender ID is ‘MSEDCL’ (e.g. VM-MSEDCL, VK-MSEDCL). Also, from this official message, no one is asked to contact any official’s mobile number.

“MSEDCL only sends messages in case of a power outage due to pre-planned maintenance and repair, the probable duration of the power outage as well as the amount of monthly electricity bills, appeals to customers to send their meter readings, date of meter reading, and a total number of units used, electricity bill amount, information on the due date, power outage notice, etc.”, the power utility stated in a press release.

In case of any queries, the consumers should contact the toll-free number 1912, 18001023435, or 18002333435 or the nearest offices which are open 24 hours a day, MSEDCL has appealed.
