Pune: Doctors At Sassoon Hospital Perform Rare Surgery To Remove 1.5 Kg Thyroid Tumor

Pune, 17th September 2023: A team of doctors at state-government run Sassoon Hospital successfully performed surgery on a 1.5 kg thyroid tumor on patient Sanjeev Kumar from Bihar. Kumar had been traveling to different hospitals for the past 15 years, but was rejected by reputed hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune.

 

 

Kumar was facing difficulty breathing and his voice had changed due to the tumor. He was also facing difficulties in daily life due to the weight of the tumor on his neck.

 

The surgery was performed by Dr Sanjay Kumar Sonawale, Head of ENT Department, and his team comprising Dr Akriti Nimani, Dr Rupakita Sarkar, Dr Nimita Dubey, Dr Praneet Khandagale, Dr Madhav Konke, Dr Priyanka Shinde, Dr Sheryl Joseph, and Dr Sherap Bhutia.

 

Dr Sunita Khade (anesthesiologist) and her team performed the necessary tasks, while nurses Juhi Pawar and Sharvari Gawde as well as assistants Gengje Mama and Tanaji Mama provided valuable assistance.

 

Dr Sonawale said that the ENT department at Sassoon Hospital has state-of-the-art equipment, including three modular operation theaters and modern surgical equipment like diode laser, covlator, and micro divider.

The department also performs endoscopic surgeries without ear and nose incisions. It has also done 22 cochlear implant surgeries under the guidance of Dr Sameer Joshi for deaf children. The department is also equipped with a stroboscope for examining voice-box and vocal chords.

 

Dr Sanjeev Thakur, Dean of the BJ Government Medical College and Sassoon Hospital, said that the state-of-the-art treatments are available at Sassoon hospital. He also added that children born with hearing loss and hearing loss within 5 years of age, can speak and hear well after treatment at Sassoon hospital.

 

The dean further informed that surgeries for cancer of ear, nose, throat and larynx (ca larynx) mouth cancer are performed at Sassoon hospital. This problem of not opening the mouth (trismus) caused by Gutkha is also treated here.
