Pune, 17th April 2024: Dr. Anil Kakodkar, a senior scientist, emphasized the importance of focusing on meaningful research and technology development to enhance human life. He pointed out that India’s research should aim to contribute new knowledge and develop new technology that can positively impact human life, rather than engaging in nominal research that achieves neither goal.

Dr Kakodkar made these observations during the Prof. Ram Takwale Memorial Lecture hosted by the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL). The event was attended by notable individuals such as Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sanjiv Sonawane, Savitribai Phule Pune University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Parag Kalkar, MKCL Chief Guide Vivek Sawant, Managing Director Vasudha Kamat, Senior General Manager Uday Panchpore, and Dr. Revathi Namjoshi.

Dr. Kakodkar noted that while India aspires to become a developed nation, the growing divide between urban and rural areas must be addressed. He emphasized the need to bridge this gap to achieve progress on a global scale. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of child development in Anganwadis (child care centers) and its impact on a child’s later abilities. Research and coordination between home, Anganwadis, and the social environment are essential for successful child development.

Dr. Kakodkar also stressed the necessity of skill education for livelihood and the broader vision it should entail. He questioned whether the current education system aligns with this vision and suggested that skill education should be integrated into regular education.

While there are numerous opportunities for professional education, Dr. Kakodkar observed that the number of institutions providing high-quality education is limited. This has led to intense competition for admissions and the rise of coaching classes in the education sector. He expressed concern that many vocational colleges focus more on business than education.

Dr. Kakodkar concluded by highlighting the complementary relationship between education and research. Cultivating a research mindset can improve education and enhance the quality of education provided. Research topics should be closely examined to ensure they align with these broader goals.
