Pune, September 14, 2020: Dr Anuya Nisal, Principal Scientist in Polymer Science and Engineering Division at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL), has been awarded the INAE Young Entrepreneur Award 2020.

The award is in recognition of her efforts towards co-founding and nurturing the startup BiolMed Innovations incubated at Venture Center. The startup BiolMed Innovations Pvt. Ltd is recently renamed to Serigen Mediproducts Pvt. Ltd.

BiolMed was co-founded by a team of scientists under the Lab2Mkt scheme in 2015 and has been incubated at Venture Center since then. The technology was licensed from CSIR-NCL to Biolmed under a knowhow agreement. The Lab2Mkt program is Venture Center’s flagship early-stage technology commercialization program.

Biolmed is an innovation-driven tissue regeneration products company. BiolMed leverages the materials science of natural silk proteins to develop biomedical products. The research has been published in peer-reviewed international journals and the technology has been protected by filing patents in India and overseas.

The flagship product of Biolmed is a bone replacement material called as Serioss. This material can be used in the human body to plug large cavities/ defects (large than > 3 -4 cm in size) formed in the bone due to cancer, trauma, infection, etc. Biolmed has taken major strides in taking Serioss through in-vitro laboratory tests, preclinical animal tests and is now readying for the first human clinical trials. Over the next two years, Biolmed will complete the clinical validation of the product and will launch the product in the Indian market after obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. BiolMed is the recipient of the prestigious DBT-BIRAC-BIG, SBIRI and BIPP grants as well as a National award from Ministry of Chemicals and Petrochemicals for 2018-2019 for Polymers in Public Healthcare category. This work would address some of the relevant and challenging problems in healthcare and contribute to making India self-reliant.

At CSIR-NCL, Dr. Anuya Nisal leads a group performing cutting edge scientific research in the areas of biomaterials, cell culture and tissue engineering. Her research interests include structure-processing-property-performance relationships of natural and synthetic polymers. She is also the recipient of the Leaders in Innovation Fellowship from Royal Academy of Engineering, UK and a TIE-BIRAC-WiNER award for Women in Entrepreneurial Research.

Dr Anuya has been invited to attend The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) Annual Convention which is being conducted online from December 17-19, 2020. The award will be conferred on her virtually in the Award Ceremony to be held during the Annual Convention.
