Pune: Drivers Take Dangerous Reverse Route on Sinhagad Road Flyover Amid Traffic Jam

Sinhgad Road, 6th May 2025: In a shocking incident that highlights growing traffic mismanagement in Pune, several motorists were seen dangerously reversing their vehicles on the newly inaugurated flyover on Sinhagad Road after getting stuck in a massive traffic jam on Monday night. The reckless act has raised serious concerns about road safety and the absence of traffic enforcement on the stretch.
According to eyewitnesses, the jam started after the Fun Time Theater junction and extended all the way to Veer Baji Pasalkar Chowk in Vadgaon. Frustrated by the standstill, commuters ignored traffic norms and took illegal U-turns on the flyover, driving in the wrong direction toward Rajaram Bridge. The reverse movement caused further congestion near Vitthalwadi Kaman and created confusion for vehicles coming from the opposite side.
“There was no traffic police present to control the situation. It was chaos, and accidents could have easily occurred,” said a local commuter who was stuck near Santosh Hall during the jam.
The two-kilometer-long flyover, built by the Pune Municipal Corporation and inaugurated on May 1, connects Vitthalwadi Kaman to Vadgaon. Since its opening, the route has seen a surge in vehicular load, but infrastructure at the junction where the flyover ends has not been upgraded to handle the traffic flow, leading to frequent snarls.
Senior civic and police officials, including Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, had visited the location recently to assess the problem. However, residents allege that no concrete measures have been taken to address the issue since the visit.
“There is a need for immediate traffic management and permanent solutions like signage, lane separation, and continuous police monitoring,” said another resident from the area.
As the city continues to grapple with rapid urban growth, this incident underlines the urgent need for better planning, enforcement, and civic responsibility.
