Pune: Municipal Commissioner Cracks Down on Inaction as Street Encroachments Go Unchecked

Pune, 6th May 2025: Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has issued strict instructions to the Additional Commissioner and the Anti-Encroachment Department to take consistent action against unauthorized street vendors and encroachments across the city. In a stern message, he has also directed officials to submit regular reports and serve notices to those failing to act on the growing problem.
Despite dedicated teams and enforcement vehicles deployed on busy city streets, unauthorized vendors continue to operate openly, raising questions about the effectiveness of the civic body’s action. The issue came to light again on Sunday, when footpaths along F.C. Road were blocked by hawkers, making it nearly impossible for pedestrians to walk safely.
Notably, the municipal encroachment truck (MH 12 RN 2260) was seen parked near the Ranade Institute bus stop, while another enforcement van (MH 12 W 0478) stood near Arya Bhushan Printing House. Yet, vendors had set up shop right beside and in front of these vehicles, clearly indicating inaction by on-ground teams.
Following a complaint, Commissioner Bhosale took serious note of the situation. “We have received multiple complaints regarding rising encroachments. Mobile and stationary teams have been deployed in several areas, but if unauthorized business continues despite their presence, strict action will follow,” Bhosale said. “Officers responsible will be issued notices if they are found neglecting their duty,” he added.
Deputy Commissioner of the Anti-Encroachment Department, Sandeep Khalate, confirmed that a renewed directive has been issued. “On Sunday evening, vendors were found operating on Namdar Gokhale Road (FC Road) even in the presence of our teams. The Commissioner has ordered an immediate explanation from the concerned officers. All teams — mobile, stationary, and department officials — have been instructed to carry out regular enforcement in every part of the city,” Khalate said.
The Municipal Corporation has faced mounting criticism over its failure to curb encroachments that not only obstruct pedestrian movement but also pose traffic and safety hazards.
