Pune, 6th May 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has updated its earlier forecast, now predicting thunderstorms and rainfall in Pune starting Wednesday, (7th May). A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued for the city and surrounding district areas for the next four days.

Previously, forecasts indicated the possibility of rain with gusty winds on Tuesday (6th May). However, the IMD’s latest satellite and radar observations have shifted that outlook by a day. According to Dr. SD Sanap, Scientist at the IMD in Pune, a cyclonic circulation currently active over Gujarat and Rajasthan is generating moisture-laden winds. These winds were expected to reach Pune by Tuesday, but they have only reached northern Maharashtra so far. As a result, the conditions necessary for thundercloud formation are now anticipated to develop fully by Wednesday.

Several parts of northern Maharashtra have already experienced thunderstorms and even hail in some areas. These changes are causing a gradual shift in Pune’s weather pattern as well. The delay in cloud formation is attributed to the slower-than-expected development of the cyclonic system in western India.

While the probability of rainfall on Tuesday has diminished, it hasn’t been entirely ruled out. Dr. Sanap emphasized that weather updates will continue to be refined through real-time satellite and radar data.

For Tuesday, Pune is expected to record a stable maximum temperature of 38°C, while the minimum may dip slightly to around 22°C. The skies are likely to remain mostly clear, though some cloud cover may appear in the afternoon and evening.

By Wednesday, the maximum temperature is expected to fall slightly to 37°C and further down to 36°C on Thursday. Minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 22°C throughout.

The IMD also warned of the possibility of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur along with these stormy conditions.

Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather reports and take necessary precautions during the forecasted period of instability.
