Katraj, 15th June 2024: Bharati Vidyapeeth police arrested two men, Nikhil Shinde (30) and Siddharth Ranpise (28) of Sahakarnagar, for extorting Rs 5 lakh from a resto-bar owner in Katraj.

The arrests were made after the duo threatened to file complaints against the owner at the district collector’s office and the excise department over alleged irregularities in his establishment.

Sub-Inspector Dheeraj Gupta, leading the operation, stated that the 57-year-old resto-bar owner, also an office-bearer of an association representing restaurant and eatery owners, filed a complaint.

According to the complaint, Shinde and Ranpise had been visiting the establishment since May, alleging issues such as inadequate parking facilities, poor food quality, and illegal operation.

“After receiving the complaint, we set up a trap and caught the duo red-handed while accepting Rs 5 lakh,” PSI Gupta confirmed.

The arrests were made for offences under sections 384, 385, 386 (extortion), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
