Pune: Education Department Cracks Down On Unrecognized Schools, Shuts Down 77 Across Maharashtra
Pune, 25th April 2023: The Maharashtra state education department is cracking down on schools that have been operating without official recognition from the government.
In a recent inspection, the department found errors in the documents of around 800 schools across the state, which prompted further investigation. As a result, 77 schools have been closed down, with the largest number of unregistered schools found in Palghar district.
The proliferation of private, self-financed English medium schools across the state in recent years has led to a sharp rise in the number of unrecognized schools operating outside the purview of the government. In order to open a school in the state, it is necessary for educational institutions to fulfill certain criteria set by the government and obtain official recognition.
However, earlier this year, documents from three schools in Pune were found to be fraudulent, which prompted the state education commissioner, Suraj Mandhare, to order inspections of other board schools across the state. The inspection found errors in the documents of around 800 schools, and as a result, a total of 77 schools have been closed down.
The closed schools are spread across the state, with six schools in Pune district, 13 in Mumbai municipal area, 15 in Thane district, 20 in Palghar district, and 10 in Nagpur district. The remaining schools are spread across various districts in the state.
“We take cheating the society and the government very seriously, and action will be taken against any educational institutions found to be operating without official recognition,” said Mandhare. “Additionally, if any administrative deficiencies are found in this process, action will be taken against those responsible. We aim to complete the process of shutting down unauthorized and bogus schools by April 30.”
