Pimpri, 25th May 2023: Due to the accumulation of large amounts of silt in Ravet Dam on Pavana River, the storage capacity of the dam is decreasing day by day. Also, it has been many years since the dam was built. After the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) followed up with the Irrigation Department, the Irrigation Department surveyed the dam. The Water Supply Department informed that to increase the storage capacity of the dam, the municipality will also break the rocks in the dam.

Water is being supplied to the residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad from the Pavana Dam in Maval. For the past several years, water has been collected from the Ravet Dam, brought to the Municipal Authority’s Water Purification Center, purified, and distributed to the citizens. However, a large amount of silt flows along with the water in the Ravet Dam. Therefore, the water storage capacity of the dam is decreasing day by day.

Shrikant Sawane, Associate City Engineer of the Water Supply Department informed, “Considering the same, after the PCMC followed up with the Irrigation Department, the Irrigation Department has surveyed the dam. After that, the PCMC has recently deposited Rs 10 lakh with the Irrigation Department to test the soil in the dam area.”

Accordingly, the soil will be tested in the next few days. After that, the Municipal Corporation is planning to break the rocks to increase the storage capacity of the dam, he added further.

The Municipal Corporation is taking water from the Ravet dam. However, while water comes from the Pavana River, contaminated water is being released directly into the Pavana River from some villages. Therefore, the impure water is pumped and purified, and given to the citizens to drink.

Against this backdrop, the Municipal Corporation had demanded the construction of a Kolhapur-style dam in the Shivane and Gahunje areas where there is clean water. For this, after requesting the Irrigation Department, the tender process for the work of these two dams has also started.
